BBC News has a really cool video about the fluid piano — a piano that can be made to play different notes with only a small adjustment. The cool thing about this is that it means that other musical styles using different harmonies from the traditional Western ones. It’s pretty neat, though it would probably drive beginners nuts to play on.

Isn’t that one of the most annoyingly vague phrases ever? This article uses it in relation to judging piano auditions. I understand where the author is coming from — once you’re past a certain level of skill from applicants, there needs to be something else you look for — but at that point it gets so subjective.

I know I do. For those feeling a bit lost, I’m talking about the main theme to the new Sci-fi (or is it really Syfy now?) show Caprica, a prequel to Battlestar Galactica. Even if you’ve never seen the show, the music really is beautiful. Here’s a tutorial on how to play the piano version:

In many ways I’m old-fashioned about music, but I do think technology has its place in music education. I definitely think students today are more likely to be interested in music if they get to use some of the new technology available. James Frankel talked about this in a recent blog post, and I think the part about better reaching students not in the instrumental program is very relevant.

LOL, so most of us probably don’t think of classical music as especially rebellious, but the writer of this article says that’s one of the reasons he got into it. I have wondered before if we shouldn’t pretend to ‘ban’ it to get teenagers interested ;)
